SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts, May 7 -- Rep. Richard E. Neal, D-Massachusetts, chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, issued the following statement on May 6 after the House filed a brief with the Supreme Court regarding California vs. Texas:
"As our country continues to grapple with the largest public health crisis of our lifetime, the Affordable Care Act has never been as crucial for saving lives as it is today.
"During an emergency of this magnitude, we should aggressively expand access to care for all Americans through a special enrollment period and help recently unemployed individuals afford their COBRA coverage.
"Instead, the Trump Administration is dead set on playing politics and destroying the law that has allowed millions more people to gain coverage over the last decade.
"I'm glad that the House today filed our brief with the Supreme Court and underscored to the nation that the ACA is lawful."
