Rep. Hoyer Issues Statement on Republican Attempts to Revive TrumpCare

House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today following Speaker Paul Ryan's press conference announcing that the Rules Committee will meet this afternoon to consider an amendment to the TrumpCare bill pulled from the House Floor two weeks ago:

"One might have thought that House Republican leaders had gotten the message when they had to pull their disastrous health care bill from the Floor two weeks ago that the American people do not want to be forced to pay more for less and lose the protections of the Affordable Care Act. Their attempt to revive this legislation in an 'emergency' meeting of the Rules Committee just before the House leaves for the April district work period is unprecedented and adds to an already-chaotic process lacking transparency.

"No small tweaks can change the fact that this bill would be extremely dangerous for our country and would kick 24 million off their coverage while raising premiums 24-29%, on average. The uncertainty surrounding Republican efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act has destabilized insurance markets across the country and must come to an end.

"Republicans need to listen to the 75% of Americans who want Congress and the President to make the Affordable Care Act work instead of dismantling it. That same Kaiser Family Foundation poll also found that a majority of those who voted for President Trump feel the same way. While I know that Republican leaders had originally hoped to ram their harmful bill through Congress before their Members would have to face their constituents over the April district work period, Republicans will still hear from their neighbors back home that Trumpcare is not what the American people support. Democrats will continue to oppose any effort to repeal the Affordable Care Act and require Americans to pay more for less."
