Rep. Engel Scores 100% on League of Conservation Voters 2019 Scorecard

WASHINGTON, March 24 -- Rep. Eliot Engel, D-New York, issued the following news release:

Congressman Eliot Engel is pleased to announce he has once again received a perfect 100% score on the League of Conservation Voters 2019 Environmental Scorecard.

Engel received a perfect score because of his "continued work to push back against the Trump Administration's efforts to gut our environmental protections that threaten public health and champion Congressional action to combat the climate crisis," said LCV Congressional Champions Project Director Davis Bates. Notably, Engel voted against the USMCA Trade Agreement because it lacked sufficient regulations and protections to combat climate change and other forms of pollution. The agreement was supported by a bipartisan majority in the House, with only a select few Democrats in opposition.

"I am incredibly proud of my environmental record going all the way back to my first days in Congress," Engel said. "A perfect score on the annual LCV scorecard means you understand what's at risk and are willing to do what's right for the planet, even when it isn't politically expedient to do so. Climate change is an existential threat and must be treated as such. The Trump Administration is dead-set on destroying all of our environmental protections, and they have the disgraceful track record to prove it. If we don't take drastic action now to protect this world, we will have doomed ourselves and future generations. I'm proud to stand with the LCV in the fight to protect our environment."

According to the League of Conservation Voters, annual scores are based on a scale of 0 to 100 and calculated by dividing the number of pro-environment votes cast by the total number of votes scored. The average score for a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives was 56 percent. Since 1970, the National Environmental Scorecard has been providing objective, factual information about the most important environmental legislation considered and the corresponding voting records of all members of Congress.
