Pybus Market hosts 2nd Annual Firewise Day on Saturday

Wenatchee World, The (WA)

Feb. 21--Wenatchee -- Learn how to protect your home from wildfire on Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the events room at Pybus Public Market.

As recent years have shown, some of the most valuable home projects are those that protect property and structures from wildfire. During the event, safety agencies will share information and resources on how to make homes and landscaping more defensible.

They will share information on how to create defensible spaces around homes, about fire-resistant building materials and landscaping, how to plan for disasters and of the benefits of being a Firewise community -- working together as neighbors to protect the community from wildfire.

The Washington State Emergency Management Division will bring bilingual representatives and literature to the event and be available to answer questions in Spanish.

"Brush, grass and forest fires don't have to be disasters. Homeowners who take individual responsibility for preparing their homes from the risk of wildfire can substantially reduce the risk of a disaster," said Joe Gluzinski, Firewise event organizer. "There are some commonsense things we all can do today to protect ourselves and our neighbors from the risk of wildfire, and the vendors at Pybus Market this Saturday will provide educational resources to anyone who stops by," he added.

Firewise Day is family-friendly and includes art projects for children courtesy of the Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center, and a chance to meet smokejumpers with wildland firefighting suits on display. There will be a live wildfire painting by artist Brad Brisbine. TV station NCW LIFE will broadcast the event.

This year Firewise Day is being expanded to include these live presentations:

10 a.m. Firewise Plants and Landscaping by the Chelan-Douglas Master Gardeners

11 a.m. Evacuation Levels 1-3: What they really mean by Chelan County Emergency Management

Noon How to Setup a Firewise Adapted Community, by the Cascadia Conservation District

1 p.m. Meeting your Homeowner Insurance Expectations, AAA Insurance Agency

Admission is free and open to all ages. For additional information please contact Gluzinski, 509-665-6286 or [email protected], and Steve Robinson executive director for Pybus Market, 509.679.7143, [email protected].

Reach Tricia Cook at 509-663-5213 or [email protected].
