Police reports: Georgia woman, 18, charged after Tuesday wreck, suicide

Herald-Sun (Durham, NC)

Oct. 07--DURHAM -- A woman who was injured in a Tuesday car wreck, has been arrested and charged with possession of a stolen vehicle following what became a fatal incident near the Durham Police Department's 505 W. Chapel Hill St. headquarters.

Durham Police spokesperson Kammie Michael said the woman has been identified as Michaelia Desaree Daughtridge, 18, of Marietta, Georgia, who was also arrested on a fugitive warrant from Georgia where she was charged with armed robbery.

She was being held at the Durham County jail Tuesday without bond.

Jeremy Darnell Artis, 21, also of Marietta, Georgia was driving the car in which Daughtridge was a passenger when at 11 a.m. Tuesday he attempted to make an illegal left-hand turn onto South Gregson Street near police headquarters.

Artis' vehicle hit a car on South Gregson Street before veering into the police headquarters' parking lot. He fled from the vehicle on foot, crossing Jackson Street and onto Gordon Street where, according to several witnesses, he fatally shot himself in the head.

Michael said several officers followed Artis on foot but no shots were exchanged between Artis and officers.

Suspect charged in break-ins, thefts

CHAPEL HILL -- A 20-year-old man has been arrested and charged following a string of break-ins and vehicle thefts in Chapel Hill.

According to Chapel Hill Police, Keith Demetrius Wright of Durham has been arrested and charged with relation to the crimes which took place at several downtown fraternity and sorority areas.

Wright has been charged with two counts of felony larceny of a motor vehicle, two counts of felony burglary, two counts of felony breaking and entering to a motor vehicle, misdemeanor damage to property, felony larceny and misdemeanor larceny.

Wright was also served with three warrants for probation violation and additional charges may be forthcoming.

He was being held at the Orange County jail in lieu of $110,000 bond.

Man accused of insurance fraud

RALEIGH -- A Durham man has been arrested while already imprisoned and charged with insurance fraud and filing a false report in Durham County.

According to the North Carolina Department of Insurance, Michael Travis Lowe, 30, filed a fraudulent claim with Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company and made a false police report, claiming he was struck by a motor vehicle while crossing the street and suffering injuries on Jan. 31.

Lowe was arrested while serving time at the Tabor Correctional Institution is being held in lieu of $5,000 bond.

-- Roy Bright, 29, of North Holman Street has been arrested and charged with assault on a female. He was being held at the Durham County jail without bond.

-- Mikie Corbitt, 36, of North Roxboro Street has been arrested and charged with communicating threats and making a harassing phone call. He was being held at the Durham County jail in lieu of $3,000 bond.

-- Duane Simon, 31, of Thelma Street has been arrested and charged with failure to report a new address as a sex offender, maintaining a vehicle, dwelling or place with a controlled substance, two counts of possession of a firearm by a felon, possession with the intent to manufacture, sell or deliver a schedule IV controlled substance and robbery with a dangerous weapon. He was being held at the Durham County jail without bond.

-- Ronnie Vaughn, 50, of Crooked Branch Road has been arrested and charged with assault on a female and interfering with emergency communication. He was being held at the Durham County jail without bond.
