Police: Driver charged with DUI after striking vehicle
Hour (Norwalk, CT)
July 28--NORWALK -- Following a car accident Thursday night, police charged a Norwalk man with driving under the influence after police say he had nearly three times the legal limit of alcohol in his system.
Police were called to the area of East Avenue and Fitch Street at 8:13 p.m. on a report of a motor vehicle accident. The driver of the car that had been hit from behind told dispatch, 'I think the other driver is drunk,' police said.
Police say that both cars were stopped at a red light and when the signal turned green, Hawyer Solis drove into the back of the other car.
According to police, Solis emitted a strong odor of alcohol, was unsteady on his feet and was leaning against the police car for balance. He also had glassy eyes and slurred speech, police said.
Solis was unable to perform three separate standard field sobriety tests satisfactorily and was taken into custody.
Solis, 34, of East Avenue, was charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence, following too closely, and operating a motor vehicle without insurance.
A test of Solis' blood alcohol level yielded a .222 result, police said. The legal driving limit is .08.
His bond was set at $250 and he was given a court date of Aug. 11.
