It's an improvement from the department's previous rating at four, the chief said, but he believes the department can improve. The department is also looking to reconfigure space in the old fire station to keep the firefighters' unclean equipment -- and by extension carcinogens -- out of the station's living spaces. Firefighters' health will also continue to be a priority moving forward, the chief said, with initiatives to provide education and awareness about suicide prevention and post-traumatic stress disorder.
The next step to implementing the strategic plan is writing out specific objectives and timelines for each goal, which the chief plans to do in January. Some goals might take the entire three years to achieve, some might not be able to be started until year two. But some, like the education and awareness initiatives, can begin immediately.
