Jul. 6--SAN YSIDRO -- A pedestrian was struck and killed Friday night about a mile north of the U.S.-Mexico border in San Ysidro, police said.
The deadly crash happened around 9:20 p.m. at a Shell gas station on East San Ysidro Boulevard, according to San Diego police Sgt. Michael Tansey.
The 68-year-old pedestrian began to cross the street just as the driver of a Dodge Journey was turning left out of the gas station, police said. The Dodge, driven by a 45-year-old woman, struck the man.
He was pronounced dead at a hospital. His name was not released.
The SUV had Mexican license plates, according to footage from OnScene TV. The driver appeared to be distraught but cooperative with the investigation. Police said the woman was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
The crash site on East San Ysidro Boulevard -- a roadway lined with currency exchange businesses, small restaurants and insurance and travel agencies -- is close to an on-ramp to northbound I-805 and the first exit ramp off the 805 for motorists who have just crossed the U.S.-Mexico border at the San Ysidro port of entry.
