Pedestran struck by Brightline train, Boca Raton police say
Palm Beach Post (FL)
Jan. 17--A pedestrian has been struck by a Brightline train in Boca Raton, city police said.
Around 2 p.m., a person crossing the track south of Camino Real was struck by the northbound train, the police department said. Police said the person was taken to Delray Medical Center with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening. Police said they were investigating why the person was trying to cross the track.
As of last fall, seven people had been struck and killed by Brightline trains since the high speed rail company began passenger service in January along the Florida East Coast Railway tracks near the Intracoastal Waterway. In addition, one other person was killed last year during Brightline's testing.
Other crashes also have taken place along the FEC tracks and the Tri-Rail-Amtrak tracks to their west.
Brightline has said in the past that its safety and security team evaluates areas where accidental deaths and suicides have occurred. The rail line has started a public-awareness program to warn pedestrians to heed lights and crossing gates.
All Aboard Florida, which operates Brightline, is owned by an affiliate of Fortress Investment Group LLC, a global investment management firm. Fortress Investment Group LLC is contracted to manage and advise New Media Investments Inc., which owns GateHouse Media, the parent company of The Palm Beach Post.
