Pat Geraghty retiring as president and CEO of GuideWell/Florida Blue

Jacksonville Daily Record

Pat Geraghty will retire as president and CEO of GuideWell and Florida Blue on Dec. 31 after serving since 2011, the company announced March 31.

During his tenure, Geraghty, 65, led the transformation of Florida's largest health insurer into GuideWell, a comprehensive health solutions enterprise, with a significant presence in Puerto Rico and across the country while also expanding Florida Blue's reach and impact across the state.

Geraghty's successor has not been named.

"Pat Geraghty's visionary leadership has transformed our organization and positioned us as a national leader in the evolution of health care. His commitment to members, employees, and the communities GuideWell serves has been extraordinary," Thomas Kuntz, chairman of the GuideWell and Florida Blue boards of directors, said in a news release.

"Under his guidance, the company has grown from $8 billion to $32 billion in revenue while maintaining a strong mission focus. He has strengthened the company immeasurably and his dedication to our values and to helping people and communities achieve better health has had a profound impact on our culture, the health insurance industry, and the communities where GuideWell and its companies operate."

"Being entrusted with the leadership of GuideWell / Florida Blue has been the highlight of my career. I treasure having had the opportunity to reshape a traditional insurance company into a health solutions enterprise with the consumer as the focus, and with wellness, care support, and quality of care for our members as integral to our mission of 'helping people and communities achieve better health," Geraghty said in the release.

It said he helped diversify the company, overseeing acquisitions that expanded the company's geographic reach and business portfolio.

With more than 18,000 employees, the organization now serves more than 38 million people across 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

He led the transformation of Florida Blue from a traditional health insurance company to a comprehensive health solutions provider with a focus on wellness, keeping people healthy and creating resilient communities across the company's service area.

GuideWell, under Geraghty's guidance, was a leader in implementation of the federal Affordable Care Act, offering products in all 67 counties in Florida and becoming one of the largest providers of individual insurance coverage among Blue Cross Blue Shield plans.

Geraghty is a prominent figure in Florida's business community and health care landscape, advocating for better health outcomes and community wellness. He is a longstanding member of the Florida Council of 100, was named Florida Trend's Floridian of the Year in 2014, Florida Atlantic University's Business Leader of the Year in 2023 and was inducted into the First Coast Business Hall of Fame by the Florida Council on Economic Education. In 2019, he was awarded the Humanitarian Silver Medallion by OneJax in recognition of his contributions to the Jacksonville community.

The GuideWell/Florida Blue board of directors has initiated a national search and succession planning process and engaged Russell Reynolds Associates, a leading executive search and leadership advisory firm, to evaluate internal and external candidates, the release said.

GuideWell comprises Florida's Blue Cross Blue Shield plan, Florida Blue, which is the leading health insurer in Florida; Triple-S Management, Puerto Rico's Blue Cross Blue Shield plan; GuideWell Health, a portfolio of integrated care delivery organizations providing primary and urgent care at nearly 100 Florida medical centers and affiliate clinics, which includes Florida Blue | Sanitas Medical Centers; Emcara Health, which partners with primary care providers to extend care into the home; GuideWell Source, which provides administrative services to federal health care programs; and WebTPA, an administrator of self-funded employer health plans.
