One Year After Hurricane Michael, Senator David Perdue Discusses Disaster Response With Red Cross

DOUGLASVILLE, Georgia, Oct. 2 -- Sen. David Perdue, R-Georgia, issued the following news release:

Ahead of the one-year mark since Hurricane Michael devastated Southwest Georgia, U.S. Senator David Perdue (R-GA) visited the Red Cross Biomedical Processing Center in Douglasville, Georgia for a tour and discussion about disaster preparedness and response.

"When disaster strikes, the Red Cross is often one of the first organizations on the ground helping communities recover and rebuild," said Senator Perdue. "Nearly one year ago, Hurricane Michael devastated Southwest Georgia, and we saw just how critical it is to prepare for the impact and aftermath of a dangerous storm. The Red Cross of Georgia immediately stepped up to help families reunite and provided food, shelter, and health services to those in need. I want to personally thank Jennifer Pipa and the entire Red Cross team in Douglasville for welcoming us today to learn more about their outstanding operation."

Background on Senator Perdue's Work to Deliver Disaster Relief After Hurricane Michael:

* On February 26, 2019, Senator Perdue led a bipartisan group of senators in introducing a $13.6 billion disaster relief package for those impacted by Hurricane Michael and other natural disasters.

* On June 6, 2019, President Donald Trump signed into law critical disaster relief funding for Georgia and other states impacted by hurricanes, wildfires, floods and other natural disasters.

* On September 10, 2019, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue announced agricultural producers affected by Hurricane Michael, or other natural disasters in 2018 and 2019, could begin applying for assistance through the Wildfire and Hurricane Indemnity Program Plus (WHIP+).
