Oklahoma family in claims battle with State Farm

Mecca Thompson/KFORNBC - 4 KFOR

MIDWEST CITY, Okla. (KFOR) — The Copeland family, from Midwest City, has been in an ongoing battle with insurance giant State Farm after an electrical surge destroyed their home.

In cell phone video from July 2025, the camera captures a set of backyard powerlines maintained by OG&E sparking.

The family says the downed power lines sent an electrical surge through their Midwest City home, frying their electrical system and damaging every appliance they owned inside.

Andy Copeland told News 4, "State Farm does not acknowledge at any point anything is damaged. They've hired engineers, different firms to come out. Everything in this home that has been tested is dead. They have tested every component. It's almost like they're trying to prove that we are wrong."

Attorney General Gentner Drummond intervenes in State Farm lawsuit filed by Oklahomans

Andy is a U.S. Military Veteran running a small business with his wife, Nikole. They have two children, and their house is paid off, but it's now a total loss and needs to be rebuilt.

"What State Farm offered us initially $48,000 to repair the home," Copeland said.

"We had two [adjustors] that came on site, and one was $290,000, and the other one was $307,000. And then when you add all the personal property that was damaged, on top of that, it's about $420,000 is what the claim would be," he added.

The Copelands have been living in hotels and short-term rentals over the past six months.

Their lodging is covered by an insurance benefit that pays for temporary housing while home repairs take place.

However, no repairs have been made, and the house sits empty, with their living expense benefits set to run out next month.

State Farm sent News 4 a statement:

We have shared it with the appropriate partners for review. Due to our customer privacy policy, we can't discuss specific claim details, but we can share that we've been actively working with our customer and their chosen contractor to reconcile differences, address concerns, and provide them every benefit available under their policy.

State Farm Corporate Communications

The Copelands also filed a complaint with the Oklahoma Insurance Department. We reached out to OID, but they are unable to comment on customer claims due to confidentiality terms.

The Attorney General's Office told our newsroom that they also received a complaint from the family and are actively reviewing it.

Since OG&E maintains the power lines, we also reached out to them for any updates:

"OG&E understands Mr. Copeland's interest in receiving updates; however, OG&E is not involved in the insurance agreement between Mr. Copeland and State Farm. We are unable to process the potential claim until State Farm provides a final repair statement."

Oklahoma Gas & Electric

The Copelands say they plan to pursue legal action against State Farm.
