New York Life’s CFO John Fleurant Announces Plans to Retire

Targeted News Service (Press Releases)

NEW YORK, March 18 -- New York Life Insurance, a mutual life insurance company, issued the following news release:

New York Life today announced that John Fleurant, the company's Chief Financial Officer (CFO), will be retiring from the company in the second quarter of the year after nearly a decade of noteworthy contributions. Joel Steinberg, currently the company's Chief Risk Officer, will become interim CFO upon Mr. Fleurant's retirement while the company conducts a search for a new CFO.

Mr. Fleurant, who joined the company in 2010 with oversight for financial planning, controllership, and tax and treasury activities, has developed and improved the company's financial reporting, capital management, and expense analytics capabilities, while bolstering the talent and finance operating model.

"I want to thank John for his many contributions to the company and for successfully enhancing our Finance organization and industry-leading financial position. We wish him well in the next chapter of his life," said Ted Mathas, Chairman and CEO of New York Life.

Mr. Steinberg is responsible for the company's risk management activities and oversight of all actuarial functions including required capital, product pricing, financial reporting, and embedded value. A 35-year veteran of the company, Mr. Steinberg has held a variety of increasing senior level roles at the company, including serving as the Chief Financial Officer for New York Life's Life and Annuity business.

"Joel's extensive finance and actuarial experience across nearly every part of our organization, along with his deep understanding of our Finance organization, make him the ideal choice to lead the function while we conduct a search for a new CFO," said Mr. Mathas.

The company also announced that Liz Brill has been named Senior Vice President and Chief Actuary. Ms. Brill, who has been with the company since 2010 and has been serving as Deputy Chief Actuary, has a wide-ranging actuarial and legal background and has served in a variety of capacities at the company, including in capital management, regulatory support, and actuarial modeling.
