NEW: Juno man charged with setting car on fire outside townhome
Brace allegedly confessed to the crime while reporting a claim to his insurance company. Brace said he did not call police because he was scared regarding the "Black Lives Matter" movement and did not know how police would treat him, according to an arrest report made public Friday.
Prior to the alleged arson, Brace had been experiencing marital troubles, according to police. On Sunday, his wife reported to officers that Brace had taken several items from their home and changed passwords on her personal online accounts. She waited for a friend to pick her up as she felt it was unsafe to go home, police said.
Brace's wife and other relatives told investigators they were concerned about his recent erratic behavior.
On Monday, as officers were investigating the fire, Brace reportedly went out the back of his home to hand a relative a mailbox key, then went back inside. The relative opened the mailbox and found several handwritten notes inside.
In the notes, Brace appeared to express discontent about the state of his marriage. On one page, he wrote 'Let's burn this (expletive)," but does not mention the car specifically, police said.
After being taken into custody, he requested to have an attorney.
