Nevada Republican gubernatorial candidate’s family sign scathing letter opposing him

Oct. 24--Nothing brings a family together like the political opposition of one of its own.

Adam Laxalt, the Nevada Attorney General who's running as the Republican candidate for governor, faces an ugly op-ed against him in the Reno Gazette-Journal -- from 12 members of his own family.

"Most concerning are the ethical shortcomings that have come to light while Adam has been attorney general, and his willingness to ignore the law for self-serving political purposes," his relatives wrote. "In his short time in public office, Adam has already demonstrated a servitude to donors and out-of-state interests that puts their concerns ahead of real Nevadans'."

The Laxalts pointed out that although the candidate boasts of his Nevada roots, he left Reno "as an infant" and spent most of his life in Washington, D.C.

He moved back to Reno in 2013, just a year before launching his political career, they wrote.

"Aside from the occasional short visit, Adam never knew the state or its people," the letter reads. "Perhaps if he had, he would stand for Nevada's values rather than for those of his out-of-state donors."

They also cited his positions on health care, reproductive rights, the environment and education as reasons to vote for his opponent, Democrat Steve Sisolak.

"It's worth saying that this column isn't about politics. We would be proud to have a Laxalt running for office on Nov. 6, regardless of whether they were Republican or Democrat or independent, so long as we believed that they would be good for Nevada," they wrote. "We're writing because we care about Nevada and because we know the truth about this candidate. We think that you should, too."

A recent Sienna College/New York Times poll has Sisolak up eight points over Laxalt, who received an endorsement from President Trump at a rally last week.
