NARAL Pro-Choice America Issues Statement on Affordable Care Act Stabilization Package

WASHINGTON, March 20 -- NARAL Pro-Choice America issued the following statement by Adrienne Kimmell, vice president of communications and strategic research, on Republicans attempt to add abortion restrictions to the Affordable Care Act stabilization package:
"This provision is entirely unnecessary, and shows the great lengths Republicans will go to push their anti-choice agenda. A restriction like this could lead insurance providers to drop abortion coverage, and have a devastating impact on access to abortion for millions of women across the country.
"A patchwork of harmful federal and state laws already prohibit insurance coverage of abortion in public programs like Medicaid and in the private insurance markets. This means too many women are already denied abortion coverage because of the amount of money they have or don't have or where they live--and now Republicans want to make it worse.
"Women should be allowed to make decisions about their own lives, bodies, and futures without the interference of out-of-touch politicians. And we know that bans like these fall hardest on women of color, low-income women, young people, and LGBTQ people. Everyone deserves coverage for a full-range of pregnancy care--including abortion--no matter how rich or poor they are. NARAL strongly urges senators to oppose any supposed compromise that would expand abortion coverage restrictions."
