MPC to consider application to rebuild destroyed business

Jan. 02--Glynn County's Mainland Planning Commission is expected to consider an application to rebuild Bargeron Powersports and Marine.

The establishment on U.S. Highway 341 burned down in May 2017 in a blaze fueled by 55-gallon drums of high-octane racing gas caught fire, Glynn County Fire Department personnel said at the time. Fiberglass and plastic in boat hulls and rubber tires also fed the flames.

More than two dozen firefighters spent 90 minutes fighting the blaze before declaring it a loss, and remained on site for several hours longer to contain flareups.

The site plan application details a 21,250 square foot office building and service shop.

The county planning and zoning division's staff report states the owner wants to reopen and run the same business as before the fire.

The original parking lot along Highway 341 did not meet the county's setback requirements, the staff report states, and the application requests a buffer waiver to allow it to keep the same configuration as before.

According to the application, the owners insurance requires construction begin by May of this year.

County staff, in the report, recommend approving the application and waiver along with a stipulation that a wider buffer is constructed along Aubrey Street and Butler Drive.

In other business, the planning commission is expected to consider a site plan application filed by Seaboard Construction to install a trailer on a property off Golden Isles Parkway north of Dekan Avenue. The county, in the past, approved a surface mining permit for the property.

The 600 square foot trailer would be used as a scale house and employee shelter for a surface mining operation, according to the applications' staff report.

Planning and zoning staff recommend approval of the application.

The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Jan. 8 in the Old Glynn County Courthouse, 701 G St. in Brunswick.
