MOSKOWITZ REINTRODUCES LEGISLATION TO REDUCE HOMEOWNERS INSURANCE COSTS FOR FLORIDA FAMILIES

"Insurance costs are crushing
Under the bill, the federal government would:
Create a catastrophic reinsurance backstop so insurers can lower premiums and avoid "risk of ruin" after major disasters.
Issue post-event bonds when losses exceed a state's reinsurance cap, with states repaying the bonds over ten years through a temporary surcharge only if a catastrophic event occurs.
Allow states to opt in voluntarily and apply the backstop to a broad range of disasters, including hurricanes, severe storms, wildfires, earthquakes, and more.
Independent estimates show the legislation could reduce insurance rates by roughly 25%, saving the average
