Mitchell man faces several charges after colliding with backhoe
Daily Republic (Mitchell, SD)
Nov. 26--A Mitchell man was arrested on several charges for a hit-and-run crash with a backhoe early Wednesday morning in rural Hanson County.
At approximately 7 a.m. Wednesday, the Hanson County Sheriff's Department received a report of a vehicle that struck a backhoe in a ditch near 257th Street and James River Road intersection, according to Hanson County Sheriff Brandon Wingert.
When authorities arrived to the scene on Wednesday morning, the driver had fled. Later on that day, 21-year-old Michael Eaves, the driver of the vehicle, called the Hanson County Sheriff's Department and self-reported the crash.
Eaves told authorities he was driving southbound at a speed of 70 mph down James River Road, when he lost control of his Chevrolet Cavalier and slid into the ditch, colliding with a utility company backhoe around 2 a.m. on Wednesday.
Eaves vehicle was totaled, while the backhoe received minimal damage, according to Wingert.
Eaves was cited for careless driving, failure to report an accident, driving with a suspended driver's license and failure to have proper insurance.
