McKay appointed to term on Citizens Property Insurance Corp. Board of Governors

Aug. 01--A Bradenton real estate businessman and former state senator has accepted a new role.

Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis announced the appointment of John M. McKay to the Citizens Property Insurance Corp. Board of Governors on Tuesday.

The mission of the Citizens Property Insurance Corporation, a not-for-profit alternative insurer, is to provide insurance protection to property owners who are entitled to but cannot find coverage in the private insurance market, according to the corporation's website.

McKay, of Bradenton, is president of The Riverside Real Estate Company. He brings more than 35 years of real estate and property management experience to the board of governors. Expertise, he said, that has made him aware of the challenges "everyone has with insurance."

Though he has not served the Citizens Property Insurance Corp. before, McKay recalls working with them during his time in the Florida Senate from 1990 to 2002, during which he also served as Senate president from 2000 to 2002.

McKay said he is looking forward to serving on the board of governors and is pleased Patronis thought of him for the role.

McKay succeeds former board member Juan Cocuy of Palm Beach County, the release stated.

McKay's three-year term will end July 31, 2020.

In addition to his time in the Senate, McKay has served the community as board chairman for the Manatee Rural Health Foundation and the McKay Academy. He is also a former board chairman for the Lakewood Ranch Medical Center and Ringling Museum of Art.
