Man, 61, struck, killed crossing Providence street

PROVIDENCE — A Providence man was struck by a pickup truck and killed Monday night on Broad Street.
The police identified him Tuesday afternoon as Pedro Gonzalo Polanco Martinez, 61.
The driver of the Ford F-150 pickup truck that struck Martinez was charged with driving to endanger, death resulting. He was identified as Joe Mendonca, 29, of Johnston.
At about 9:45 p.m., Martinez left Mi Sueno nightclub and was crossing Broad Street in front of the business when he was struck by the truck, which had been traveling north, the police said in a report.
The impact propelled Martinez about 130 feet onto the sidewalk, according to a police report. He was taken to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at about 9:47 p.m. Family members, including Martinez's wife, were at the hospital and informed of his death by social workers, the police said.
Mendonca stayed at the scene. He was taken to police headquarters, where he was booked, charged and held for appearance in District Court, Providence, according to the police. He was also charged with driving too fast in conditions requiring reduced speed and lacking proof of insurance, according to a police report.
The Police Department's accident reconstruction team investigated.
