Louisiana eases military auto insurance discount process

American Press StaffAmerican Press

By Misty Castile | The Center Square

Louisiana military members eligible for a 25% discount on the liability portion of their auto insurance premiums will no longer have to reapply every year under a regulatory change announced this week by the Louisiana Department of Insurance.

Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple issued Bulletin 2026-11, simplifying the application process so eligible service members only need to submit the required application once instead of annually.

The change applies to active-duty military personnel stationed in Louisiana, military reservists based in the state and members of the Louisiana Army National Guard and Louisiana Air National Guard.

"The brave men and women serving our country dedicate themselves to protecting the very freedoms that make America great," Temple said in a statement. "This law recognizes their service by helping military members save on auto insurance. I made this change with the intent to incentivize more of our service members to take advantage of this significant discount."

To receive the discount, eligible service members must complete the Louisiana military discount application and submit it to their insurance company or agent with documentation verifying eligibility.

Active-duty personnel and reservists must provide current military orders showing assignment to a Louisiana duty station. Members of the Louisiana Army National Guard or Louisiana Air National Guard must provide a letter from their commander on official unit letterhead confirming membership.

The 25% discount on the liability portion of an auto insurance policy was created by Act 770 of the 2004 Louisiana Legislature.

Under existing state guidance, insurers also may voluntarily extend the discount to veterans with a Department of Veterans Affairs disability rating of at least 50% and to retired members of the U.S. Armed Forces, National Guard, Louisiana Army National Guard and Louisiana Air National Guard. Those discounts are optional rather than required.
