Try innovating

Flagler County is in the midst of a 50-year, $99 million program to stabilize the dunes along most of its coast line.

Hurricane Dorian's near miss of that coast line resulted in a 5-10% loss of the recently replenished sand, according to the Flagler County engineer. Distant Dorian was far from typical of the storms we have seen recently and may expect to see on a regular basis in the future and we still lost a significant amount of our shoreline to erosion. The Flagler County engineer said this loss was according to plan -- that the sand was supposed to be "sacrificial" sacrificed to protect the dunes behind it.

That says to me that the designers expect to lose sand repeatedly, without any control over the loss, and eventually so much sand could be lost to a major storm that we would again see State Road A1A damaged and beach front property washed away.

I was told the Army Corps of Engineers considers seawalls and beach renourishment to be the most cost effective fixes for storm and tidal erosion. "Cost effective" is apparently a very relative term. "Fixes" this vulnerable should not be our only alternatives.

The Army Corps and the state need to be encouraging and testing innovative methods of beach erosion control now, since we can only expect erosion to get worse with the expected intensifying storms and rising sea levels.

More outrage

It is my daily practice to read the letters printed in the Daytona Beach News-Journal. Some express views similar to mine, and some definitely do not. In Sunday's paper there was one which fit the latter category. It discussed the feelings of the writer toward the press, Congress, the media, and the entertainment industry, among others. Here is the other side of the coin. I am devastated by an administration that has seen fit to insult our allies and cozy up to dictators.

I am devastated by an administration that denies climate change and deems white supremacists "fine people."

I am devastated by a president who denigrates women, the disabled and minorities.

I am devastated by a president who profits from the presidency and assaults the free press for reporting all of the above. Where is the outrage?

Allied with enemies

Why are the Democrats giving aid and comfort to our enemies?

Don't they realize every time they bash our president and use smear taactics to try to destroy him that Russia, China and North Korea are rubbing their hands together with glee?

And knowing that the Democrats are on their side, they are almost likely already planning to invade and enslave (maybe kill) us. Is that what Democrats want?

Is their hatred of President Trump so deep that they are willing to destroy us all?
