‘Live and Let Die’ plays as Trump visits face mask plant without wearing a face mask amid coronavirus

Guns ‘n Roses’ rocking rendition of “Live and Let Die” played as President Trump visited an Arizona mask factory without wearing a mask Tuesday amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Talk show host Jimmy Kimmel weighed in on the appropriate soundtrack to the president’s bare-faced appearance at the Honeywell aerospace plant in Phoenix.

“I can think of no better metaphor for this presidency than Donald Trump not wearing a face mask to a face mask factory while the song ‘Live and Let Die’ blares in the background,” Kimmel wrote on Twitter.

The lyrics to the tune, written and recorded by Paul McCartney for the 1973 James Bond film bearing the song’s name, speak of a compassionless dog-eat-dog world where it’s every man for himself.

“But if this ever changing world in which we live in makes you give in and cry, say live and let die,” the lyrics go. “What does it matter to you, when you got a job to do, you got to do it well, you got to give the other fella hell.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urges Americans to wear face coverings to slow the spread of COVID-19, which has killed more than 71,000 people in the U.S. in less than three months. Face coverings are thought to protect the people around the person wearing the mask as much as the mask-wearer. The White House has said people close to the president are screened for the virus and Trump, who is tested regularly, is not a threat to spread the infection.

Vice President Pence made the same case after being criticized for ignoring the Mayo Clinic’s mask requirement during a visit to that Minnesota medical facility last week. Pence later did an about-face and confessed he should have worn a facial covering.

The Trump Administration is working to strike a balance between re-opening the nation’s economy while keeping workers safe.

The president, who at times wore goggles during his visit, tweeted a dramatic “Thank you” video to the Honeywell company for its efforts.
