LIFESPAN: LifeSpan SHIP counselors help seniors navigate Medicare options

LAURA SEVERSON LifeSpan volunteerJournal Gazette & Times-Courier

As autumn arrives, older adults across Illinois face a vital, but often overwhelming, task: evaluating their health insurance coverage with Medicare or a former employer with retirement.

For local residents, the process does not have to be a solo journey. The LifeSpan in Charleston serves as a trusted guide through its Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP). SHIP is part of the Illinois Department of Aging certification program.

Medicare plans fluctuate year to year. Insurance companies frequently alter their premiums, deductibles and covered drug formularies, which means a plan that worked this year might cost significantly more next year. Because of these changes, and not having the resources to search for others, SHIP programs exist to eliminate that stress by offering free, personal and completely unbiased health insurance counseling.

During Open Enrollment, seniors are often bombarded with aggressive television commercials, confusing mailers, and unsolicited phone calls promising "free" benefits. Navigating these media ads can be exhausting. Because SHIP counselors are certified by the Illinois Department on Aging and are not affiliated with any insurance company, they do not sell anything. Their only objective is to advocate for the seniors, helping residents explore Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C), drug coverage or Part D, and supplements.

During a consultation at Lifespan, a certified counselor sits down with the individual — or their family caregiver — to review their current medications and preferred medical providers. Using the official Medicare database, the counselor runs a personalized comparison to see which local plans yield the lowest out-of-pocket costs for the upcoming year. They also can help spot predatory scams or misleading plans that sound too good to be true.

By empowering seniors with accurate information, the program protects their health and their budgets, directly advancing the Council on Aging's core mission to cultivate independence, well-being, and dignity for older adults in Coles County. By scheduling your appointment, know that Open Enrollment closes on Dec. 7, and changes made during this time take effect on Jan.1. Because appointment slots at the LifeSpan Center fill up rapidly during this busy season, residents are strongly encouraged to schedule a review early.

You can make an appointment by calling 217-639-5150. If you have someone you have seen in the past, ask for their first open appointment. Otherwise, ask to make a SHIP appointment. Please bring a list of your medications, and a list of your current medical providers. Don't forget all your insurance cards, or what you think are important health insurance cards. Lastly, please remember to bring a form of identification in a form of a state ID, or a driver's license. And most importantly, bring your cell phone for secure codes to be sent to it and a working email address you own. It must be yours, and yours alone.

We'll see you soon and remember, if you need a ride and lunch, call Dial-A-Ride for your appointment and schedule Peace Meal.
