La Crosse man pleads guilty to deliberately hitting motorcycle in Bliss Road crash

Nov. 5--A La Crosse man was sentenced Monday to community service for misdemeanor criminal damage to property after he pleaded guilty to hitting a motorcycle with his vehicle in July.

Matthew M. Sallander, 38, had already paid restitution to Nicholas McCollough after the crash on Bliss Road going up Grandad Bluff.

"I screwed up and I've been dealing with it ever since," Sallander told Judge Todd Bjerke in La Crosse County Circuit Court.

According to the criminal complaint, Sallander was driving his blue 2002 Jeep Liberty up Bliss Road in La Crosse on July 10 when a motorcycle driven by Nicholas McCollough came up behind him and began passing him on the left in a no-passing zone.

Sallander told police he deliberately swerved left; however, he didn't intend to hit McCollough, only scare him. His vehicle hit the motorcycle, causing it to fall and skid about 10 to 20 feet, according to the report.

McCollough told police he was driving at about 25 to 30 mph when he passed Sallander and said it was a "dumb decision" to pass in the no-passing zone.

Assistant district attorney Sue Donskey said the criminal conviction was a punishment in itself for Sallander, who had never previously been arrested. She said both parties were culpable for the incident.

"This appears to be two people quite frankly acting stupidly, acting dangerously to themselves and anyone else who may have been driving in the road at this point," Donskey said.

Sallander's attorney, Vincent Rust, pointed out that Sallander was the one who called police and he admitted to his mistake.

"I don't know if I've dealt with anybody who is going to be less of a danger to the community," Rust said.

Bjerke agreed with Donskey that both Sallander and McCollough were at fault, saying, "This could have been avoided."

"I run on that road. People go too fast in the first place," Bjerke said.

Bjerke sentenced Sallander to either pay a $443 fine or complete 20 hours of community service, in addition to the restitution he provided to McCollough.

McCollough was cited for reckless driving, operating a motor vehicle without a motorcycle license and operating a motor vehicle without insurance, according to the report.

Passe, 44, La Crosse, was charged July 26 operating with prohibited alcohol concentration with a minor child in the vehicle and operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated with a minor child, both third offenses. Police arrested Passe, who had a 9-year-old baseball player of the team he coaches, in his vehicle, after his preliminary breath test indicated a result of 0.237 percent, according to the criminal complaint.

Police arrested Herzer after a victim reported money stolen from his vehicle and his credit card reported about $300-worth of purchases, according to the criminal complaint.

Taylor, 34, La Crosse, was charged July 26 possession with intent to deliver methamphetamine, maintaining a drug trafficking place, felony bail jumping, possession of THC and possession of drug paraphernalia. A criminal informant helped police arrest Taylor, who had more than 100 grams of suspected methamphetamine and $3,200 in cash, according to the criminal complaint.

Danick, 33, La Crosse, was charged July 25 with attempting to flee or elude an officer (repeater), threat to a law enforcement officer (repeater), operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated (second offense) attempt battery to a law enforcement officer (repeater), attempted battery to a law enforcement officer (repeater), resisting an officer (repeater), disorderly conduct (repeater), misdemeanor bail jumping (repeater), operating with prohibited alcohol concentration (second offense). Police arrested Danick after an 0.5-mile vehicle pursuit after fleeing police conducting a traffic stop, according to the criminal complaint.

Jennifer L. Carrillo, 37, La Crosse, was charged July 25 with possession with intent to deliver counterfeit methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine, possession of narcotic drugs, maintaining a drug trafficking place, felony bail jumping and possession of drug paraphernalia. Police arrested Carrillo after conducting a search warrant and discovering three grams of suspected meth and about 450 grams of fake meth, according to the criminal complaint.

Joshua Dekota Tidwell, 31, La Crosse, was charged July 25 with possession with intent to deliver methamphetamine, a second-offense repeat offender. Police discovered about three grams of a white-crystallized substance while arresting Tidwell for a Department of Corrections warrant, according to the criminal complaint.

Torek C. Inderberg, 40, Onalaska, was charged July 24 with possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia, as a repeat offender. Police discovered drugs in Inderberg's possession after validating he had a probation warrant, according to the criminal complaint.

Landers, 31, La Crosse, was charged July 24 with delivery of methamphetamine, delivery of methamphetamine (as a party to a crime), possession with intent to deliver methamphetamine, possession of THC and possession of drug paraphernalia. A criminal informant helped police arrest Landers who was in possession of drugs, according to the criminal complaint.

Alan C. Mauss

Alan Mauss, 67, of New Albin, Iowa, was charged July 23 with driving while intoxicated, fourth-offense. Mauss was arrested at 2:38 a.m. Tuesday near the ramp to Interstate 90. He had a blood alcohol level of 0.062, according to the preliminary breathalyzer, above the 0.02 limit for fourth-time offenders. Mauss also was driving on a license that has been revoked indefinitely since 2011.

Dominique Hister, 17, La Crosse, was charged July 23 with felony bail jumping, a Class H felony, according to the complaint. At the time of Hister's arrest on the 200 block of South Eighth Street, he was out on two felony bonds, including one that had listed house arrest as a condition of the bond.

Corey Taylor, 33, was charged July 23 with spitting at a public safety worker, a Class I felony, and three misdemeanor counts including battery, resisting an officer and disorderly conduct. There is a warrant to extradite Taylor back to Missouri for an existing conviction and sentence.

James Arthur Draeving, 53, La Crosse, was charged July 3 with stalking, two counts of misdemeanor bail jumping, knowingly violated a domestic abuse temporary restraining order and knowingly violated a domestic abuse injunction, all with a domestic abuse enhancer. Police arrested Draeving after he violated a temporary restraining order by sending several emails to the victim and contacting her neighbors in an attempt to surveillance her, according to the criminal complaint.

On June 25, police responded to a theft call at My Place Bar where a victim claimed their wallet and other belongings were taken from the bar top. After the responding officer reviewed surveillance tape, police determined Swertfeger was the perpetrator. Swertfeger was in custody on a different call, and under 24 hour suicide surveillance, and was unable to be interviewed regarding the theft at the bar. These charges were added to existing charges, according to the complaint.
