In This Week's Edition of the Ashley Accountability Alert, Iowans Are Calling Out Hinson for Making Their Health Care More Expensive and a New Report Finds Hinson Missed Key House Votes for a Campaign Fundraiser

DES MOINES Ashley Hinson ruined the week for thousands of Iowans after it was reported that their health insurance premiums will skyrocket for the "second straight year" after Hinson voted to let ACA tax credits expire.

And the week didn't get any better for Iowans struggling under Hinson's watch...

First, thousands of Iowans will see average health insurance costs increase by up to 16.84%. The hikes come after "nearly one-fifth of Iowans with ACA plans dropped their coverage" over the last year after Hinson voted to make it more expensive.

Hinson repeatedly voted against extending the Affordable Care Act tax credits, which would have prevented 100,000 Iowans from seeing their health insurance premiums double on average.

Then, according to a new report from American Journal News, Ashley Hinson missed critical votes on major national security issues to raise money for her Senate campaign.

On June 24, she missed "pivotal House votes" on amendments to the 2027 Defense appropriations bill, including votes on "how the Defense Department spends money" and the "proposed drawdown of American troops stationed in Europe."

To round out the week, local Des Moines leaders and Iowans experiencing increased health insurance premiums came together to call out Ashley Hinson for causing health insurance premiums to increase by voting against Affordable Care Act tax credits.

Des Moines Register: Iowans will likely see ACA health insurance premiums rise again

Thousands of Iowans will likely see their health insurance premiums rise next year after insurers in the state recently released proposed rate increases for 2027.

These higher rates would mark the second straight year where some Iowans see double-digit premium hikes the result of the expired expanded Affordable Care Act subsidies and rising medical costs.

Premiums will see average increases of 4.98% to 16.84% across multiple Iowa insurers offering ACA-compliant individual plans next year, according to rates filed with the Iowa Insurance Division in June. The 2026 rate increases ranged from 12.5% to more than 25%.

The hikes also come as nearly a fifth of Iowans with ACA plans dropped their coverage as of February following January's expiration of enhanced subsidies, according to a KFF analysis.

Recently released federal data on ACA enrollment from February shows a 17% drop-off roughly 21,000 fewer people compared with the same time last year. In February 2025, 124,311 Iowans were covered by the ACA, compared with 103,253 last February.

American Journal News: Hinson missed key votes while fundraising for Senate campaign

Iowa Rep. Ashley Hinson missed pivotal House votes because she was busy fundraising for her U.S. Senate campaign.

On June 24, the House Appropriations Committee voted on 11 amendments to the 2027 Defense Appropriations bill, which will fund the Pentagon and related defense programs in the next fiscal year. Hinson, who sits on the committee, missed seven of the votes.

Hinson missed votes covering a range of national security topics, including how the Defense Department spends money, the proposed drawdown of American troops stationed in Europe, and changes to which military officers are eligible for promotions.

"Now, Ashley Hinson says she didn't go to Congress to get rich [] She says she proactively sold her stocks to prove it and that's true. She sold her publicly traded stocks. But her family's disclosures show up to $5 million in a private stock for an insurance business. I guess private stocks don't count? Meanwhile, since she took office, her family's net worth has climbed from a maximum of $1.6 million to as much as $8 million."

"Back to that tax loophole that she was pushing. It's called Section 199A. It lets owners of pass-through businesses shield 20% of their income from federal taxes, and under Trump's 'One Big Beautiful bill, it's permanent. [] a nonpartisan analysis found most of the money flows to the top 1% at a cost to taxpayers of roughly $730 billion over the next decade."

"[Hinson] has simultaneously refused to sign on to the petition that would have forced Congress to divest from private holdings, you know, ones like hers. She has instead backed weaker bills that left her private stock untouched."

On top of that, the Daily Mail reported that since 2023, Hinson has billed taxpayers more than $50,000 to cover her rent at a luxury Capitol Hill apartment complex, and her House records also show five international trips since 2022 worth more than $110,000 paid for by special interest groups.

Now, Hinson says she's in the same boat as everyone else, trying to make ends meet, and put food on the table. [] But when she says serving in Congress shouldn't be an investment opportunity, you have to ask why it's been so lucrative.
