Insurance Adds 7,500 Jobs in February

The insurance industry added 7,500 jobs in February according to preliminary numbers released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' Economic Situation report released on Friday, March 9, 2018.

"The insurance industry added 7,500 jobs in February after several months of little-to-no growth," said Jay Rollins, owner of the insurance employment website InsuranceJobs.com. "Insurance has fluctuated between gains and losses for the past several months. Since September, insurance has both added 19,600 jobs and lost 9,400 jobs."

The insurance industry now employs 2,670,200 people in the U.S. with an unemployment rate of 2.2 percent. "Insurance unemployment has averaged 1.93 percent a month over the past 12 months. Comparatively, unemployment averaged 2.55 percent a month over the 12 month period immediately preceding," said Rollins.

Within the finance and insurance sector, credit intermediation similarly added 7,600 jobs in February. "Credit intermediation and insurance were the fastest growing subsectors within the finance and insurance sector, which added 20,400 jobs in February with an unemployment rate of 2.1 percent," said Rollins.

Across all industries, total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 313,000 jobs in February. Unemployment remained at 4.1 percent for the fifth consecutive month, and the number of unemployed persons was unchanged at 6.7 million. Employment increased in construction, retail trade, professional and business services, manufacturing, financial activities, and mining.
