Ill. House Democrats: Gordon-Booth Backs Insurance Coverage for Wigs for Cancer Patients

SPRINGFIELD, Illinois, May 3 -- The Illinois House Democrats issued the following news:

A measure supported by state Rep. Jehan Gordon-Booth, D-Peoria, would require health insurance plans to cover at least one wig for hair loss caused by chemotherapy, radiation treatment or alopecia.

"Hair can be incredibly important for people, and when someone faces significant hair loss due to cancer treatment or alopecia, it can add additional anguish," Gordon-Booth said. "After enduring significant treatment, the last thing a person should be worried about is how to afford a wig."

Gordon-Booth is backing Senate Bill 2573, which would require insurance at least once every 12 months to provide coverage for one wig or other scalp prosthesis worn for hair loss caused by alopecia, chemotherapy or radiation treatment for cancer or other conditions.

Senate Bill 2573 passed the Senate with bipartisan support, and is awaiting a vote in the House.

"This issue is important to the health and wellbeing of those impacted, and this measure can go a long way toward helping someone feel better," Gordon-Booth said. "Let's continue to promote commonsense ideas that uplift and support those facing treatment."
