Ill. House Democrats: Gill Passes Plan to Ensure Insurance Coverage for Lymphedema Treatment
A proposal passed recently by state Rep.
"Having access to compression sleeves can help people facing lymphedema have a better quality of life," Gill said. "Medical professionals are encouraging their use, and I want to make sure that those who can benefit from it have appropriate access."
Gill's Senate Bill 1527 would ensure group or individual health insurance polices and managed care plans cover medically necessary compression sleeves needed to mitigate or prevent lymphedema. Lymphedema is caused by damage to lymphatic vessels in the body, which disrupts the flow of lymph fluid and can lead to pain and swelling. Most known for impacting individuals who have gone through breast cancer treatment, lymphedema can also occur due to other conditions such as melanoma
Recent studies suggest that the regular wearing of a compression sleeve may help control symptoms, and even possibly prevent the development of lymphedema in the first place.
"Particularly for those who are recovering from breast cancer treatment, we don't need to add unnecessary burdens on them," Gill said. "I am appreciative of the bipartisan support this measure received, and of the strong advocacy of state Sen.
Senate Bill 1527 passed without opposition. It marks the first bill passed out of the House by Gill, who began her legislative career in late March.
