Hurricane Dorian: Sarasota-Manatee closures, cancellations and changes

Aug. 30--As Hurricane Dorian threatens Florida, it is affecting events in Sarasota and Manatee counties. Here is a list of closures and related events that will be updated as events change.

Sarasota County

Sarasota County schools are open Friday and all sporting events and after school activities will take place as planned. It has not been decided if schools will be opened as shelters.

At Nathan Benderson Park, the Ronald A. Balducci Playground and Event Garden will close from Saturday to Thursday morning. Park offices will be closed Monday for Labor Day. No equipment rentals will be available beginning Saturday. The park itself will be open the regular 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. hours, barring the approach of severe weather.

The Ringling Museum has closed the Ringling mansion Ca' d'Zan until further notice because of Hurricane Dorian. Joseph's Coat Skyspace is closed at least for Friday night. There will be no museum tours on Monday or Tuesday and no trams running around the property on those days. Otherwise the museum is open and operating as usual. The museum is scheduled to be open on Labor Day.

Venice

The Downtown Venice Labor Day Weekend Craft Festival has been canceled.

Manatee County

Manatee County has not announced if its shelters will be opened.

De Soto National Memorial will close at 5:00 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31. The park's visitor center, parking lot, facilities and trails will be closed to the public throughout the threat of Hurricane Dorian. The public is asked to stay away from the park and its trails until park staff is able to return and assess any damage. ok forward to your visits after we reopen.
