Hull committee to host forum on Medicare

HULL -- The public is invited to a free forum about Medicare for All, sponsored by the Hull Democratic Town Committee on Saturday, Feb. 22, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Hull Senior Center, 197A Samoset Ave.

"There seems to be much confusion about the concept of Medicare or Improved Medicare for All," said Irwin Nesoff, a member of the Hull Democratic Town Committee and an organizer of the event. "We hope that by sponsoring this forum, where people can get correct information and ask questions, more people will understand the ideas behind Medicare for All and how it will work to improve access to health care."

A panel of experts will discuss the government program and the improvements it can bring to the current health care system. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there were approximately 28 million uninsured people in the United States in 2018.

Emergency department visits remain the most expensive form of treatment and the public pays for this care through taxes and increased health care costs, according to a statement from the Hull Democratic Committee. Furthermore, a 2018 study by the Harvard School of Medicine found that as many as 45,000 people die each year as a result of not having health insurance.

The forum will begin with presentations by a panel of experts, followed by a question and answer period. Confirmed panelists include Dr. Alan Meyers, emeritus professor of pediatrics at Boston University School of Medicine and founding member of Physicians for a National HealthPlan, and Sandy Eaton, a registered nurse and health care activist.
