Hughestown man faces insurance fraud charges

Citizens' Voice, The (Wilkes-Barre, PA)

Oct. 18--HUGHESTOWN -- A borough man who reported damage to his parked car four days after getting a new insurance policy was charged Wednesday with insurance fraud for allegedly lying on the application.

Robert Michael Hourigan, 40, of 34 Washington Terrace, is accused of defrauding Allstate Insurance when he bought the policy on May 23, 2017.

According to the complaint, Allstate investigators began looking at Hourigan after he filed a claim May 28, 2017, saying his 1996 Nissan Sentra had been side-swiped and sustained rear quarter-panel damage while it was parked at the Target in Dickson City.

In his application, Hourigan did not report any prior damage or insurance claims, and indicated his driver's license had never been suspended, police said.

But investigators learned that Hourigan in fact still had an active policy on the car through USAA and had submitted a claim on that plan days before reporting the damage to Allstate, the complaint said. The USAA plan did not include comprehensive or collision coverage, police said.

The complaint said when confronted, Hourigan initially said the car had no prior damage. But when he was confronted about the USAA claim, Hourigan then claimed the USAA case was related only to front-end damage, not to the rear quarter-panel damage he reported to Allstate.

Allstate investigators turned the case over to police, who charged Hourigan with a misdemeanor count of insurance fraud for making "false and misleading" statements when applying for the insurance policy.

Police said several driver's license suspensions Hourigan had were not listed on the application, and he failed to inform Allstate about the prior insurance claim.

But police said there was not enough evidence to prove the damage Hourigan reported in the Allstate claim was the same as what was reported to USAA. As a result, they did not charge him with fraud or attempted theft related to that allegation.

Magisterial District Judge Alexandra Kokura Kravitz arraigned Hourigan on Wednesday morning and released him on $10,000 unsecured bail.

A preliminary hearing was set for Nov. 27.

MassMutual announces record $3.3 billion policyowner dividend for 2027

By Press Release

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Nov. 2, 2026) — In its 175th anniversary year, MassMutual announced that it expects to pay a record estimated $3.3 billion dividend to eligible participating policyowners in 2027, surpassing $3 billion for the first time in company history.

Highlights

  • Record dividend: MassMutual expects to pay a record $3.3 billion dividend to eligible participating policyowners in 2027.
  • Industry-leading performance: The company's dividend interest rate will increase to 6.85%, marking an expected 21st consecutive year of industry leadership.
  • 159 consecutive years: 2027 will mark the 159th consecutive year MassMutual has paid an annual dividend to eligible participating policyowners. The 2027 dividend payout will bring MassMutual's lifetime total dividends paid to policyowners to more than $55 billion.

“Behind every policy is a dream, a goal, or a future someone is working hard to build. For 175 years, our policyowners have counted on MassMutual to be there to help them navigate important moments in life in an increasingly complex world,” said Roger Crandall, chairman, president and CEO of MassMutual.

“Our record dividend payout is more than a milestone. It reflects the trust our policyowners place in us and our role helping people build security, wealth and confidence.”

Financial strength supports dividend growth

MassMutual said its ability to consistently deliver long-term value reflects its disciplined insurance operations, diversified investment portfolio and strategic businesses and investments.

Since 2007, when MassMutual began paying an industry-leading dividend interest rate, the company said it has significantly expanded its whole life insurance market position, more than tripled total adjusted capital to more than $37 billion and paid more than $100 billion in insurance and annuity benefits.

The company currently protects more than $1 trillion of life insurance in force and maintains financial strength ratings among the highest in the industry.

“At MassMutual, our dividend has long been a reflection of delivering on our purpose of helping people secure their future and protect the ones they love,” Crandall said.

“We are proud of the role we have played in the lives of policyowners, customers and communities we serve. Guided by our values, strengthened by our performance and powered by our dedicated network of financial professionals, we will continue to be there when they need us most, delivering financial strength, security and even greater impact in the years ahead.”

About MassMutual

MassMutual is a mutual life insurance company run for the benefit of its members and participating policyowners. For 175 years, the company has focused on helping people secure their future and protect the ones they love through protection, accumulation, wealth management and retirement products and services.
