HAI Group Rounds Out C-Suite with New Chief Risk Officer

HAI Group, the nation's leading member-owned property-casualty insurance company for the affordable housing industry, announced today that it has hired Dr. Reginald (Reggie) Freeman as their new chief risk officer.

In this newly created role, Freeman is responsible for overseeing the company's risk control and consulting operations as well as the enterprise risk management function. Freeman joins HAI Group from the City of Oakland, California, where he served as fire chief. Prior to leading the Oakland Fire Department, he was the fire chief and director of emergency management for the City of Hartford.

"With more than 22 years of the highest level of experience in the fire service, including the past 19 years in leadership for various organizations internationally, Reggie understands the potential risks that public and affordable housing agencies may face," said Ed Malaspina, president and chief executive officer at HAI Group. "That knowledge and awareness couples well with one of our primary loss causes – structure fires. His first-hand experience puts us in a superior position for strategic mitigation strategies."

His vast emergency services experience includes a full spectrum of management in administration, training, fire prevention, public education, fire investigation, and operations. He has also served as an adjunct professor at the University of Florida, Anna Maria College, and Capitol Technology University for both graduate and undergraduate courses in the fire science, emergency management, and public administration tracks. He earned his PhD from Capitol Technology University, master's degree from Grand Canyon University, and bachelor's degree from Bellevue University. Freeman also completed executive education and leadership initiative programs from Harvard University. He serves on the Board of Directors for the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the Center for Public Safety Excellence (CPSE), for which he is vice president.
