Granville's county manager announces resignation [Henderson (N.C.) Daily Dispatch]

May 4—OXFORD — Granville County Manager Michael Felts announced his resignation, effective July 31, at the County Commissioners meeting this week.

"We benefited greatly from his leadership," Commissioners Chairman Tony Cozart said, "He will be missed. He will be missed very much. ... We're losing somebody who has the county's interest at heart."

Felts took a position with the N.C. Association of County Commissioners' Risk Management Pools, which offers local governments in the state workers' compensation, liability and property insurance coverage.

Taking this position will allow him the time necessary to better care for his family while still working with local governments, which he says is his "passion."

The organization offered Felts his new position in February. He made a point of notifying the County Commissioners. Though Felts' decision did not come out of the blue, Cozart said it was still "somewhat surprising."

Felts was first appointed county manager in 2013 after having served Granville County as finance director for 11 years.

Cozart recalled a period in time when the South Granville Water and Sewer Authority lacked a director. Felts acted as temporary director in his spare time until a permanent replacement was found.

Cozart described Felts as someone who would do whatever he needed to do to look after Granville County.

Felts also spearheaded Granville's first long-range strategic plan and established a capital improvement program for county facilities to deal with growth, both immediate and future.

"I would like to thank the Board of Commissioners, county staff and the citizens of Granville County for giving me the privilege of serving them as County Manager and Finance Director," Felts said in a county news release. "I know the next county manager will love collaborating with our fantastic staff, commissioners, and residents just as much as I did."

Though Cozart said Felts' resignation is "not something I wanted or anticipated," the chairman said he was thankful for Felts' years of service.

The board is still deciding on a process for finding a new manager. No details are yet publicly available.
