Good Samaritan receives new car

May 01--Jerry Ramirez of Royse City was already a hero for assisting the victims of a car accident in the city last month.

His good deed helped Ramirez receive a donated car from a local automobile dealership.

But Ramirez, 18, is a Good Samaritan all over again.

"He's chosen not to accept it," Greenville Chrysler's Eric Barbosa said Tuesday, after handing Barbosa the keys to a cherry red Camaro. "He's going to donate it to someone else,"

"I already have someone in mind," Ramirez, a student at Royse City High School, said.

The story began late at the night of April 13 as Ramirez was on his way home with friends. He was driving his Chrysler 300 south on FM 548 when he drove up on an accident scene, where the driver of a pickup had lost control of his vehicle and crashed. Three others were injured.

Ramirez and his friends rushed to see if they could help while Ramirez dialed 911.

The Texas Department of Public Safety reported Endre Stampf stole Ramirez's car and led authorities on a high speed chase, which concluded at around 12:40 a.m. near the intersection of eastbound FM 276 and County Road 2300 in the Quinlan area, when Stampf lost control of the vehicle and hit a culvert. Stampf died at the scene.

Ramirez was uninjured, although his car was totaled and when word got out his insurance company wouldn't pay for the replacement, Barbosa decided to offer Ramirez the donated vehicle.

But Ramirez was already working on paying for another car, thanks to a GoFundMe account. So Ramirez is planning to give the Camaro to Jeremy Poor, a friend who was with Ramirez that night and whose car was also recently wrecked.

"My friends and I, we've been driving him to and from school," Ramirez said. "He's the one who started the GoFundMe page for me."

The GoFundMe page (www.gofundme.com/ba5spy-jerrys-car) had already raised more than $15,000 as of Tuesday evening.
