Sep. 8--Jim Hudson automotive donates $50K to food bank

Jim Hudson Automotive Group raised $50,000 during its 8th annual Jim Hudson 2000 Sales Event for the Golden Harvest Food Bank. The company's dealership group operates Jim Hudson Lexus in Augusta.

The contribution will provide 165,000 meals for people in need across 30 counties in Georgia and South Carolina. A portion of the sales of 2,000 cars in May and June went toward the donation, which was $20,000 above last year's contribution. CEO and founder Jim Hudson said the Augusta dealership was a major contributor.

Benton House holds drawing for new car

The Benton House of Augusta is celebrating National Assisted Living Week, Sept. 9-15, by converting the entire community into a "cruise ship" them that includes a company wide drawing for one of two new Kia Soul automobiles.

"We do a major event like this every month, but Cruise Week is really special because everything is themed around ship activities," said Laura Myers, executive director of Benton House, a senior living community offering assisted living and memory care services. The drawing will be held the evening of the formal captain's dinner."

Public invited to veteran project presentation

The Beech Island Historical Society will meet at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 15 at the society's History and Visitors Center at 144 Old Jackson Highway in Beech Island, S.C.

Featured speaker Frederick Gehle will report on a 10-year project locating and interviewing veterans of World War II as participants in the National Veterans History Project. Aiken Regional cares for 13 evacuees

Aiken Regional Medical Centers welcomed 13 patients and four nurses from a coastal hospital on Monday in response to evacuations ahead of Hurricane Dorian.

"With the incredible communication and planning between the two hospitals' teams, we were quickly able to admit the 13 patients. And the nurses have been a great addition to ensuring continuity of care," said Jim O'Loughlin, CEO of the 273-bed care facility.

Metro Diner supports child cancer research

Metro Diner is helping support the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation through customer donations during the month of September.

The "round-up" campaign during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month by enabling patrons to round their check up to the nearest dollar, or by choosing to donate $1, $2, $5 or a custom amount. Funds will go directly towards clinical trials and drugs that focus exclusively on childhood cancers, which affect approximately 1 in every 85 children in the U.S.

Rotarian wins President's Volunteer award

Frank Spears, an Augusta State Farm Insurance agent and Augusta West Rotary Club member, was recognized by President Trump and the humanitarian organization ShelterBox with the President's Volunteer Service award.

The award recognizes his efforts to in 2018 to provide emergency shelter and supplies to 210,00 people in 17 countries who have lost their homes to natural disaster or civil conflicts. The award is part of the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation. "The lifesaving work of ShelterBox is only possible because of our inspiring volunteers like Frank Spears," ShelterBox President Kelli Murray said.

Teleperformance donates school supplies, backpacks

Outsources customer service company Teleperformance worked with anti-hunger organization Feed the Children to provide at-risk children with backpacks filled with school supplies, hygiene items and snacks to help in the new school year.

Teleperformance volunteers, including the company's Augusta office, delivered approximately 7,500 backpacks to children across the U.S. filled with school supplies and personal hygiene items to at-risk children.

BI-LO, Harvey's donates to Heart Association

Southeastern Grocers Inc., the parent company of BI-LO and Harveys Supermarket, announced the donation of nearly $375,000 to the American Heart Association during the month of August, bringing its total donation to the organization to more than $659,000 this year.

Customers rounded up their purchases to the nearest dollar or made individual donations at the register in support of the American Heart Association's Life Is Why We Give fundraising campaign.

Peak Employment golf classic set Oct. 7

Peak Talent Capital Solutions and Peak Employment Solutions has scheduled the 9th Annual Tee It Up For Kids Golf Classic, a fundraiser for Child Enrichment Inc., on Oct. 7 at Forest Hills Golf Club. A shotgun start begins at noon.

Walmart funds USC Aiken 'Smart Girl's Classes'

Walmart teamed up with a local non-profit organization aimed at ensuring the success of young women last month to support the University of South Carolina Aiken's Super Smart Girl's Club, an Aiken-based nonprofit literacy-based program.

The retailer's $2,000 grant will be used to fund programs that include dual-enrollment scholarships, mentoring and the Flowers of Love program, which provides continuity of care to the elderly in area nursing homes. Airport support hosts child cancer benefit

Augusta Regional Airport will host its inaugural Meet-a-Machine event to benefit the University Health Care Foundation and the Children's Hospital of Georgia on Sept. 28 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Funds from the free community event will raise funds for University's Miracle Mile Walk and the CHOG Children's Miracle Network through food sales.

Attendees see and learn about equipment ranging from emergency response vehicles and planes, as well as aircraft and construction equipment. Nuclear Care Partners hosts open house

Nuclear Care Partners will host its Open House Tailgate for former Savannah River Site workers Sept. 13.

The event is free to all former atomic workers and will take place at the advocacy group's Aiken, S.C., office at 1908-A Pawnee Street. A tailgate dinner of hamburgers and hot dogs will be catered by BBQ Barn and grilled on-site. Former workers can RSVP at (803) 295-5104.

NSF Foundation donates to AU for STEM

The National Science Center Foundation has donated $905,444 to Augusta University to increase the number of students completing undergraduate degrees in science, technology, engineering and math disciplines.

Roughly 80% will support three-year scholarships for 30 students, with the remainder dedicated to educational support.

Augusta VA hosts White Cane Day

The VA Augusta Blind Rehabilitation Center will host White Cane Day at the Charlie Norwood VAMC AUGUSTA on Oct. 12 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

White Cane Day is a national observance to recognize the achievements and accomplishments of individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Tractor Supply to host farmers market
