Gold Hits Record Highs as Silver Surges, Driven by Fed Policy Expectations and Dollar Weakness

Ashlee VogenthalerPRISM MarketView

Precious metals extended their strong rally through August and early September, as gold and silver prices climbed to multi-decade highs on the back of Federal Reserve policy expectations, a weakening dollar, and geopolitical uncertainty.

On Monday, gold surged to a record $3,600 per ounce, building on August’s 5.2% gain to $3,516.1. Silver also outperformed, rising 10.76% in August to $40.75, with analysts projecting further upside to the $43.5–$44.5 range. India’s MCX market mirrored the move, with gold up 5.06% to ₹1,03,780 and silver up 8.95% to ₹1,21,702.

Drivers of the Rally

Investor sentiment has been buoyed by expectations of an imminent interest rate cut from the Fed, with markets fully pricing in at least a quarter-point reduction at the upcoming September 17 meeting and some speculating on a larger half-point move. Friday’s weak U.S. employment report further reinforced those expectations.

Chris Turner, global head of markets research at ING, said Fed rate cut expectations are “helping gold’s status as the inflation hedge,” while real rates appear poised to turn negative. Matthias Scheiber of Allspring Global Investments added that concerns over Fed independence remain a bullish driver, and Atakan Bakiskan of Berenberg noted foreign investors are shifting away from Treasuries into gold amid waning confidence in U.S. assets.

The dollar’s broad decline, down more than 10% this year, has also made gold cheaper for international buyers, while central bank purchases and geopolitical uncertainty have further supported demand. Over the weekend, the White House confirmed that gold bars would be exempt from new import tariffs, ending weeks of speculation.

Market Impact

The NYSE Arca Gold Miners Index has climbed more than 50% year-to-date, significantly outpacing gold’s 37% rise, as miners including Barrick Gold and Newmont report record profits. Analysts suggest investors consider a 5–10% allocation to gold ETFs and mining equities to hedge against stagflation risks linked to ongoing trade tensions and tariff policies.

Silver, which has held near $40.64 in recent sessions, is also expected to benefit from lower rates and tight global supply.

Outlook

With gold already up nine percent in the past three weeks and 37% year-to-date, the combination of anticipated Fed easing, a weakening dollar, and geopolitical unease continues to fuel bullish momentum. Investors will be closely watching the Fed’s upcoming decision and U.S. economic data for confirmation of the next leg in this precious metals rally.
