GEICO Kicks Off 2017 Military Service Awards to Honor Outstanding U.S. Servicemen, Servicewomen

WASHINGTON, June 1 -- Government Employees Insurance Co., a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, issued the following news release:

In 1936, Leo and Lillian Goodwin's vision for the company centered on providing insurance for government employees, military personnel and their families. Military services continues to be an integral part of GEICO, and the company is honored to support those who offer their services so willingly.

Following a long tradition, GEICO is now accepting nominations for the 30th Annual Military Service Awards. Each military branch will select a top volunteer to be honored for his or her outstanding service to their military and civilian communities.

The deadline for entries is October 31, 2017.

"In 1988 GEICO launched the Military Service Awards program to recognize the valuable contributions enlisted members of the Armed Forces make in their communities," said Wayne Petro, director of GEICO's military department. "As a military retiree, I know the importance of our enlisted force. We are the home of the free because of the brave! We don't know all of the enlisted members in all of the branches of our wonderful military but we certainly owe them all! Many of our enlisted service members even go above and beyond the call of duty to support the public good. We are extremely proud to have the opportunity to honor those distinctive volunteers each year."

Each unit, base, post, or activity may nominate eligible enlisted members, according to the established procedures of its particular service. Nominees should exhibit noteworthy contributions or accomplishments while serving on active duty or in the reserves/national guard in one of the fields recognized by the GEICO Military Service Awards.

GEICO presents awards in three categories:

Drug and Alcohol Abuse Prevention

Fire Safety and Fire Prevention

Traffic Safety and Accident Prevention

The GEICO Philanthropic Foundation will present GEICO Military Award recipients with a cash award and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., from wherever they are serving.

The 2017 GEICO Military Service Awards ceremony will be held in Washington, D.C., on April 30, 2018, with military officials and GEICO representatives in attendance.
