Garbage truck driver arrested after crash in Williamsburg

Times-Tribune (Corbin, KY)

Feb. 28--A Williamsburg man was arrested following a single-vehicle crash involving a garbage truck that shut down a portion of West Main Street in Williamsburg for over six hours Monday.

The garbage truck was traveling west along Main Street toward KY-92 when it dropped off the roadway, traveling approximately 70 feet through a ditch line before flipping and coming to rest on its side in the road, according to Williamsburg Police Chief Wayne Bird. A utility pole was also destroyed during the crash.

The driver, identified as Dustin Sumner, 26, was transported to a CarePlus Center for a blood test, which allegedly showed that Sumner was under the influence of drugs at the time of the crash.

Bird said that his department had received "several complaints" from individuals over the past week alleging that Sumner had been driving the garbage truck while intoxicated.

Sumner was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of intoxicants, failure to produce insurance card, failure of non-owner operator to maintain required insurance and numerous commercial vehicle violations. He was jailed in the Whitley County Detention Center.

The crash occurred at approximately 10 a.m., where workers were on the scene attempting to clean up hydraulic fluid, repair the utility pole and clear the roadway until after 5:30 p.m.

Kentucky State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement was in charge of the scene, with the police department being in charge of the arrest.

Assisting at the scene was the Whitley County Sheriff's Department, Williamsburg Fire Department, Williamsburg Sanitation Department, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and crews with AT&T.
