From murderer to terrorist: These are the charges faced by Luigi Mangione

CE Noticias Financieras

Luigi Mangione, charged with murder against UnitedHealthcare insurer CEO Brian Thompson, will appear in a Pennsylvania court on Monday, December 23.

In total, Luigi Nicholas Mangione will face eleven charges in New York, including two counts of second-degree murder, one of them as a crime of terrorism "for the brazen, targeted and premeditated shooting of Brian Thompson," Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg explained at a press conference.

The prosecution's indictment in New York Supreme Court states that Nicholas killed Thompson in "furtherance of an act of terrorism" that "was intended to intimidate or coerce a civilian population, influence the policies of a government department by intimidation or coercion, and affect human life."

In Pennsylvania, where he remains incarcerated, he has charges related to false identification documents and possession of a gun that police claimed to have found on him when he was arrested.

Mangione could face a maximum sentence of life in prison on charges of first- and second-degree murder as a crime of terrorism (since there is no death penalty in New York), said Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch.

Mangione was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after a McDonald's customer recognized him and notified an employee. Police in Altoona, about 370 miles west of New York, were promptly summoned.

They arrived to find Luigi sitting at a table in the back of the restaurant, wearing a blue medical mask and looking at a laptop computer, according to a Pennsylvania police criminal complaint.

He initially gave them a fake ID, but when an officer asked Mangione if he had recently been to New York, he "became quiet and began to shake," the complaint says.

When he lowered his mask at the officers' request, "we knew he was our guy," said rookie officer Tyler Frye.

What was the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson like?

Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was shot and killed last Wednesday, December 4, in front of the Hilton Hotel in Manhattan as he was on his way to the building to attend his health insurance company's annual investor conference.

The shooting prompted a large police deployment in search of the alleged killer, who fled on foot and then got on an electric bicycle and rode into Central Park, according to police reports.
