Four hospitalized with minor injuries following two crashes on U.S. 287 Tuesday

Oct. 15--Four people were hospitalized with minor injuries Tuesday morning, after two separate car crashes on U.S. 287 in Longmont.

Emergency crews first responded around 8:30 a.m. to Ninth Avenue and U.S. 287, which is Main Street within the city limits.

According to Colin Jessen, a Longmont police traffic officer, the crash occurred when a 54-year-old Longmont woman in a Mitsubishi Galant was traveling west on Ninth Avenue in the left turn lane. She attempted to turn left on Main Street during a yellow light. Meanwhile, a 34-year-old woman in a Toyota Camry was traveling east on Ninth Avenue, when the cars collided in the intersection.

Both were the sole occupants of their vehicles and transported to Longmont United Hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the Mitsubishi Galant was cited for careless driving and failure to yield right of way when turning left in front of approaching traffic, according to Jessen.

Drugs and alcohol were not factors in the crash.

Police wrote in a Facebook post that eastbound Ninth Avenue was closed from Coffman Street, while northbound Main Street was closed just south of the intersection. The roads remained closed for about an hour as emergency responders worked at the scene.

Shortly after, at 9:09 a.m., Boulder County units responded to a crash at U.S. 287 and Vermilion Road just north of the city, with northbound U.S. 287 closed at the intersection.

Colorado State Patrol Trooper Josh Lewis said the two-vehicle crash involved a 59-year-old woman driving a Volkswagen station wagon and 49-year-old man driving a Toyota sedan. Both drivers were transported to Longmont United Hospital with minor injuries.

The station wagon was traveling westbound on Vermillion Road and the sedan was traveling northbound on U.S. 287 when the vehicles collided, causing the Toyota to roll onto its roof. Lewis said information about how the crash occurred was not yet available.

Both parties were cited in the crash. The driver of the station wagon was cited for careless driving and the sedan for no insurance and expired plates, Lewis said.
