Dec. 31--A storage unit fire near an area apartment complex has destroyed approximately two-thirds of the building's contents and left at least two firefighters injured.
Onslow County Fire Marshall Brian Kelly says a call was received between 7:30 and 8:00 p.m. Friday evening reporting storage units on fire at Storage One Self Storage, located in the 3000 block of Richlands Hwy.
"Multiple crews from the county were on scene throughout the night and today working to put the fire out. At approximately 11 a.m. this morning, the fire was under control," Kelly said Saturday afternoon.
Firefighters continued to work Saturday smothering hot spots that still may be potentially dangerous, according to Kelly.
The extent of the damage is still being assessed by officials, but structural damage seems extensive.
"The fire has damaged all of the storage units. We were able to pull out the contents of some units... We really started trying to save personal belongings that residents had in units. I would say we saved about one-third of the items," Kelly said.
No bystanders or residents were injured during the fire, however a couple firefighters were treated for minor injuries, according to Kelly. He would not elaborate on the types of injuries.
"We hope to wrap up a little of assessments today and may continue for the next week or so working insurance (matters) and things like that," Kelly said.
Kelly would like to also say "thank you" to the many volunteers and community members that supported their effort with food and drinks.
