Family unhurt after heavy fire damage to attached garage

Jan. 23--Honey Creek firefighters responded to a structure fire at 1 E. Brookside Drive, just off Carlisle Drive in southern Vigo County, around 5:30 a.m. Friday.
No one was hurt in the fire, which was contained to an attached garage. The house had some smoke damage and possible structural damage, said Tom High, Honey Creek Fire Department fire chief. The garage had extensive damage.
The cause remained undetermined as of Friday evening.
Carlisle Drive had to be closed for a few hours during a busy time of day as people went to work and school. The house is located south of Honey Creek Middle School and north of Curry Drive.
The home was without power and other utilities, and the American Red Cross was contacted to assist the family, High said.
Brent Bocard, the home owner, said three family members live there and were home when the fire started, but no one was hurt, "not even the dog."
The fire might have started near a halogen light or exhaust fan in the garage, and insurance adjusters "are on their way today," Bocard said mid-morning.
The family will be storing some of its items with a neighbor and also planned to stay there overnight. The family may have to spend some time at hotels but hopes to eventually move back into the home, Bocard said.
