Estate, Succession and Retirement Program Set for January

COLUMBIA, Missouri, Jan. 2 -- The University of Missouri College of Food and Natural Resources issued the following news release:

University of Missouri Extension wants to help baby boomers who will be transferring wealth to the next generation.

MU Extension agricultural business specialist Darla Campbell says 70 percent of baby boomers are expected to retire by 2020. A three-night program offers help for farm families and individuals with succession, estate and retirement planning.

"Your Farm, Your Business, Your Future" will be held 6-9 p.m. Thursday Jan. 17, Jan. 24 and Jan. 31 at various locations throughout Missouri.

"This class is designed to help owners of farms and small businesses begin creating a plan for transferring a farm or business to the next generation, as well as addressing the many issues involved with planning your estate transition," says Campbell.

MU Extension specialists, including a certified financial planner and a Missouri probate judge, teach the program.

Topics include goal setting, assessing the strengths and weaknesses of a farm or business, the probate process in Missouri, estate planning tools, and calculating retirement needs.

Class locations:

* MU Extension Center in Adair County, 503 E. Northtown Road, Kirksville.

* Pike County Courthouse, 115 W. Main, Bowling Green.

* Monroe City Senior Nutrition Center, 314 S. Main St., Monroe City.

* Richland High School, 714 E. Jefferson Ave., Richland.

* Osceola First Baptist Church, 555 Walnut St., Osceola.

* MU Southwest Research Center, 14548 Highway H, Mount Vernon.

In case of inclement weather, the class will be extended to Feb. 7.

Pre-register by 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11. The cost is $110 per individual plus $50 for each additional person from the same business or farm. A light dinner will be provided each night.

Participants may also register for a single session at a cost of $45 for the first person and $20 for the second person from the same business.
