EDITORIAL: Tuesday letters: Abortion rights; the 2nd Amendment; Trump and ‘red button’

Jan. 08--Archbishop in minority on abortion

In commenting on the National March for Life, the Archbishop of Miami said that "The hope of pro-lifers that originalist justices will overturn Roe v. Wade " and "would return lawmaking to state legislatures." Recently, an anti-choice state law was sent back by the U.S. Supreme Court with "originalist" Justices John Roberts and Bret Kavanaugh joining the majority stopping it dead in its tracks.

Recent surveys show overwhelming support for reproductive rights as high as 72 percent in favor.

On Jan. 22, join supporters of this important freedom at 6 p.m. at the U.S. Federal Courthouse on Broward Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale.

Roe and the Catholic Church

Any time a religious leader weighs in on behalf of a political issue, his followers surely assume the leader is speaking on behalf of God. Except there is no evidence that God picks sides in political issues and these clergy know it.

Father Wenski, like any other citizen, is certainly entitled to his opinion but as the archbishop of the Archdiocese of Miami he is stomping all over his tax-free, religious organization exemption rights by using his office, his position, to speak about secular law. Since when is it OK for a religious leader to spout political rhetoric to his congregation?

His comments on the legality of Roe and Casey are no concern of the Catholic church and I see no reason the Sun Sentinel chose to publish his comments.

2nd Amendment is established law

I read with interest the guest editorial on Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2019, from the Los Angeles Times Editorial Board where they argue that states need to stop passing unconstitutional anti-abortion laws. Their reasoning is that January marks the 46th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade.

They say this is nearly half a century of settled law, so why spend the time trying to pass laws restricting abortion?

In the same spirit: The 2nd Amendment has been settled law since Dec. 15, 1791, over 218 years, yet state legislatures are continually trying to water down its intent.

In 2015 over 638,000 soon-to-be human beings were not allowed to be born, according to the CDC. In 2013 there were 33,636 deaths due to firearms according to the FBI.

If we are interested in saving lives in this country and not control over its citizens, then outlaw abortion and stop creating more gun laws.

Trump: Itching to press red button?

It is rather disgusting and tiring to see this President acting like a petulant child because he cannot get his $5 billion wall built which even border security guards think is unnecessary.

Who is running this government? Laura Ingraham, Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh and Fox News, or Donald Trump, who is trying to please his 30 percent base? If he backs down now about the wall he said he would look "foolish" but what about the other 70 percent of Americans who agree we need security but do not need to spend $5 billion on a wall that would not be complete.

What happened to real Republican senators with some backbone to stand up to the nonsense of this President who changes his mind on a whim. It is time for Mitch McConnell and Chuck Grassley to get some backbone and show their constituents they care about what is happening in this country. They should show they care about the government workers who have been laid off and are not getting paid and the many workers like TSA who are working with no pay because Trump said he could do this without regard for them or their families for as long as he wants!

I only wish that podiatrist in Queens had left written proof, as his two daughters attested to hearing from their dad many times, that he wrote a note as a favor for Fred Trump a note saying his son, Donald Trump, had bone spurs in his heel so he did not have to go into the service during the Vietnam War. Only the other day Trump said he would have made a "Great General." One has to serve in the military first and work one's way up.

Americans wake up. Whether you are a Republican or a Democrat, we need someone in the White House who knows how to govern, listens to advisers who know about the world situation and have experience (not his son-in-law who is a novice with little experience except being friends with Saudi Arabia-MBS and Israel) and takes advice.

All the men we respected in the White House have either been fired or left on their own. Donald Trump wants to be a "One Man Show" and our allies no longer respect us.

Seems this man is just "itching" to press that little red button, but I hope he can be stopped before that happens!
