Aug. 17--If you're still (by chance) searching for a textbook example of what economic and intellectual perversions government interventionism creates, look no further than to ObamaCare.
Aetna, one of the nation's largest insurers, announced Monday it's bailing out of most of the markets in which it was participating in the government's health insurance exchanges. It joined a number of other insurance companies that have been losing their shirts.
And some people actually are blaming Congress, which balked at funding an ObamaCare provision that forced taxpayers to cover the losses of insurance companies forced into this unsustainable business model.
Let us review, class:
--The government conscripts the insurance industry
--In the process, it eviscerates the risk pool model that is the definition of insurance
--It mandates that everyone have insurance or pay a fine, the "everyone mandate" being necessary to cover the entitlement into which it has turned health insurance
--Without taxpayer subsidies, insurers are either forced to drop out of markets or drastically raise rates, for which they are disemboweled on the alter of "corporate greed."
'Round and 'round this nonsense goes and where it stops everybody should know -- another disaster of government interventionism exposed yet again.
