Dr. Brett Mangum Presents Course on Ethics in Dentistry

By a News Reporter-Staff News Editor at Health & Medicine Week -- Dr. Brett Mangum, owner of and principle dentist at Mangum Dental, a family dentistry practice, recently conducted a seminar on "Ethics in Dentistry" at the Fall Conference of the Arizona Dental Association in Tucson. The course was designed to offer information to dental professionals on how to follow the highest ethical guidelines for patients (see also Mangum Dental).

The two-day conference, held at the Loews Resort in Tucson, was created by the Arizona Dental Association to allow members of the ADA community to learn about the latest advances in dentistry. Dr. Mangum's course on ethics in dentistry was designed to offer insights on the question of ethics for not only his fellow dentists, but for others attending the event as well.

"As a native Arizonian and a four year Veteran of the U.S. Navy who deployed in Iraq, the importance of ethics is a topic that is vitally important to me," said Dr. Mangum. "At times, our society seems to be de-emphasizing the time honored values of honesty and integrity in sports, politics and even business decisions, which is why I was extremely grateful to speak with my colleagues on the subject at the conference."

Raised in Prescott, Arizona and a graduate of Prescott High School, Dr. Mangum has worked to provide outstanding dental care for the residents of his hometown since joining Magnum Dental in 2005. Dr. Mangum earned a fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry - one of the highest honors available to dentists in the United States - and is acutely aware of the challenges faced by dentists each day.

Dr. Mangum's presentation focused on the ethical issues that dentists face in their everyday practice, including decisions regarding treatment recommendations for patients, insurance coverage and associated fees for patients. In addition, demands for advertising, associated promotional materials and the importance of continuing education for dentists can also offer ethical questions that dentists are forced to face every day.

"Dentists face a number of gray areas in both dentistry and medicine every day and I believe discussions like these are important so we can share and weigh in on ethical dilemmas we face. It is critical that dentists evaluate ethical issues with the view of what is in the best interest of our patients, because if we do, we will make the best and most ethical decision," Dr. Mangum said. "In the end, all we have as dentists is our integrity, and if we make ethical decisions with integrity, we can feel assured that we did what was best for them."
