Dog rescued, cat dies in Normal fire; family displaced

Pantagraph (Bloomington, IL)

Oct. 28--NORMAL -- A dog was rescued from a fire that started at a home in Normal Sunday afternoon, but firefighters say a cat was lost.

Normal Fire Department spokesman Matt Swaney said the fire started in the basement of a home at 1103 Whitaker Street in the Savannah Green subdivision at about 3:45 p.m. It took firefighters only three minutes to arrive on the scene and discover the fire in the basement, and also make sure the family was not at home.

The fire caused extensive damage to the home and a family of four was displaced. The Red Cross has been called in to assist.

Swaney said firefighters made entry and found heavy smoke throughout. A second alarm was struck which calls in off-duty Normal firefighters, and requests an additional engine company from Bloomington Fire Department to act as a Rapid Intervention Crew for potential lost or down firefighters.

The dog was revived using oxygen therapy with a pet mask, but unfortunately, firefighters were unable to revive the cat and it died, Swaney said in a statement released Sunday night.

There was extensive water and smoke damage throughout. The home is insured, but a damage estimate will not be available until the damage is calculated by an insurance adjuster, Swaney added.

There were no injuries to any firefighters on the scene.

Normal Fire Department Investigation Team members are still working at the scene to determine the origin and cause of the fire.
