Davenport & Company wins first place in midsize company Davenport & Company wins first place in midsize company

Brandy Centolanza Special correspondentRichmond Times-Dispatch

Year founded: 1863

Headquarters: Richmond, Virginia

Sector: Financial advisors

Region Employees: 288

Years on list: 2

I love my job because ...

"There is no micro-managing. They trust me to use my skills to my fullest potential to get the job done and treat our clients right while keeping my advisors on track."

"I learn something new frequently, and I'm given resources to grow and expand my knowledge of the investment business. Most of my colleagues are kind and willing to help, and training opportunities are always available."

Since 1863, Davenport & Company has provided a wealth of financial advising services to individuals and institutions, including stock and bond brokerage, investment management, financial planning, public finance and corporate finance. Originally founded as an insurance agency, today the company is an independent, employee-owned firm that serves communities in Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina and Georgia.

Brenda O. Madden, Senior Vice President, Human Resources

What do you believe most contributed to your organization being recognized as a Top Workplace this year?

Throughout our 163-year history, one thing has remained the same: our core values. We also pride ourselves on our company tenure and believe it's a testament to our workplace culture and the recognition we have received over the years.

What does career growth look like at your organization, and how do employees see a long-term future there?

We foster a strong sense of commitment and belonging, encouraging employees to invest in their futures here. Many of our associates have dedicated more than 25 years to the company, which demonstrates the opportunities for advancement and long-term stability. Employees see a clear path for growth and longevity, supported by our tradition of promoting from within and providing resources to help them advance in their careers.

What steps have you taken to promote employee well-being and prevent burnout?

We have developed an official remote work policy, which also allows flexibility when it comes to inclement weather and holidays. The firm closes early every Friday, giving our associates a jumpstart to the weekend. Lastly, the convenience of scheduling a doctor's appointment with our on-site Health Center either in-person or virtually is one of the greatest ways we promote our employees' overall well-being.

With AI and automation reshaping many industries, how are you helping employees feel prepared and be assured they will not be replaced by emerging technology?

We believe personal relationships built with trusted expertise, knowledge and experience will always play a significant role in our industry. As a regulated industry, we have developed a clear AI policy with approved AI tools to assist in certain aspects of our business. We are fortunate to have a growing information technology department that is dedicated to improving our systems and technical knowledge as we navigate the advancements of AI.

How does being based in the Richmond region influence your workplace culture?

Davenport's culture is steeped in Richmond history along with the stability of being in the region for 163 years. Being a mid-size regional, employee-owned financial services company in a diverse city with so many benefits and short commutes helps us to attract and retain employees.

How do you encourage philanthropy and a connection to the Greater Richmond community among your employees?

We have a long history of supporting organizations and projects in the communities where our offices are located, and we continue to make contributions with a preference for organizations that promote education, health and human services, culture and art, and civic and community involvement. Through our community outreach program, Davenport Shares, we are proud to support charitable organizations that provide life-enhancing services in our neighborhoods.
